COOK (CAPTAIN JAMES) EXPLORER, LOG KEPT BY MIDSHIPMAN J P NATHON MUNKHOUSE OF H.M.S. “ENDEAVOUR” DURING THE IMPORTANT PORTION OF COOK'S FIRST VOYAGE TO THE SOUTH SEAS, FROM MAY 27TH, 1768, TO NOVEMBER 19th ,1769, WHEN OFF CAPE COLVILLE, NEW ZEALAND.
*** This extremely interesting Manuscript, which was well and neatly kept, runs to upwards of 350 pages 4to, vellum. His Log commences the day Captain Cook hoisted his flag at Deptford. He records that Banks and Solander came aboard at Plymouth, the troubles with the Viceroy at Rio de Janiero, the up-country excursions by Banks and Solander at Terra del Fuego, the three months stay at Otaheite for observing the Transit of Venus, the arrangements made when in New Zealand for observing the Transit of Mercury, and states the Captain and Mr.Green had a good observation, with frequent references to the punishments given and details of the work of the crew. Munkhouse played an important part when the “Endeavour” grounded near Cape Grafton on June 10th, 1770.
She was found to be leaking badly, and Munkhouse suggested that the leak should be fothered, and as he had already seen the operation performed, he was given charge and successfully carried through his task. The gallant Midshipman was stricken by the virulent attack of malaria that occurred when off Batavia, and passed away on the 4th February, 1771. Sotheby's June 27 1923 [in margin]

Hoisted out the Boats and sent the Lieut. in the Pinnace to look for watering place saw several Indians on the shore 5 of whom came off in the boat after they had found a convenient place for wooding & filling our water. They were of a middling stature Clothed with a skin which they wrap about their Boddies, they are extremely fond of Beef and Bred and everything we gave them except spirituous Liquor which they would not touch. at 6 sent a Boat on shore with the Indians

20 Friday
Modt. gales and cloudy Wr. PM employed as yesterday. The Leaut. with the Wooders and Waterers landed as did the Boatswain with a party to cut Brooms. The Hauser which was bent to the Kedge anchor to ride the long Boat in hauling the Caskes thro’ the surf Broke; an officer with two boats went to sweep for it but could not find it. employ’d on Board stowing & filling Caskes between Decks. Weighed the strum Anchor.

The Bay of Good Success is situated in Terra del Fuego, about 2/3d of the way thro’ the Maires Straits and lies in S Latt.d [indecipherable] and the Longd:t of 66°..1’6 Wt. of Greenwich being a commodious harbour for Ships. It is about 3 miles Deep lying Et. and Wt. and 9 Broad at the entrence the depth of Water is verry regular from 14 to 4 fm. which you carry close to the Shore: the Ground everywhere a dark fine sand, except within a Cables length of the Shore and there it is Rocky and foul. this however may allways be known by the great quantities of weed growing over it.

The land is of a moderate height on Both sides and rises with an easy ascent being all covoid with Wood except the tops of the Hills inland where the ground is bare and for the most part coverd with Snow. The open part is covoid by Statin Land Et.ward. abt 7 or 8 Leg. which being of verry High land breaks of the Sea when the Winds are from that Quarter but that is but the [indecipherable]. At the Bottom or W. part is a flat sandy Beach, between which and the declivity of the Hills lies a swamp or marsh, where we found great quantities of wild Celllery and savory grape both excellent in their kind. In the Woods are Cranberries of an extraordinary large size. These with shell Fish our people found on the Rocks doubtless check’d the Scurvey. This Bay likewise is well stored with good Water, but bringing it off is no small difficulty on account of a long rolling swell and such a prodigious surf, our boats were not able to land attempting to remedy this inconvenience and to prevent all Dangers of swamping our Boats; we laid out a small Anchor, and Hauser to ride During our stay there we had a Day’s verry hard Gales of Wind attended with Rain, hail & Snow. Maney circumstances concur to render this Bay a valuable harbour in such a place as St. Le Maire.
